IDEX Price Report for 1 May: Heavy Losses Among Rounds

May 01, 23 by IDEX Online

(IDEX Online) - Caution persists and overall trading is slow, as reflected in heavy rounds losses and no more than a smattering of increases among fancies, which have fared better of late.

India is braced for fewer bulk orders, US demand remains patchy and the predicted post-Covid bounce in China hasn't fully materialized.

De Beers did however report $540m of rough sales during Cycle 3, a slight year-on-year drop, but indicative, the company said, of "encouraging positive trends".

Rounds

Rounds suffered heavier losses than of late, particularly among 0.80-cts to 2.99-cts, with very few gains to balance them out. There was little movement in smaller goods, with the exception of sharp falls among L & -M goods of almost all clarities in 0.18-cts to 0.29-cts. There were clusters of gains among 4.00-cts to 5.99-cts goods, mostly L-N / IF-SI1.

Fancies

Fancy prices fared better than rounds, as has been the case for several months now. The single biggest cluster of increases was among 0.50-0.69-cts (D-G / IF-VS2).  There was also a trend of increases in G+ / VS+ goods from 0.45-cts to 0.79-cts. Price drops dominated, however in most sizes from 0.90-cts to 5.99-cts. The biggest clusters of decreases were among 2.00-cts to 4.99-cts, mostly in G+ / VS+ goods.
