"Diamond Thief Spiked Co-Workers' Tea"

June 14, 23 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - A diamond worker has been arrested in Surat, India, after he allegedly spiked his colleagues' tea with a sedative and fled with stones valued at $14,000.

Police in the Katargam district of the city say the suspect made tea at 4am during a night shift for eight co-workers. Those who were unwilling to drink were forced to do so.

He fled the workshop with 2,700 diamonds, with a total weight of 250 carats, police said, leaving behind his unconscious co-workers.

The factory owner was alerted at 8.30am when workers arrived and said nobody from the night shift was opening the door for them.

The worker, named by police as Naresh Mali, was short of money because of a recession in India's diamond market. He was arrested in Banaskantha district and all the diamonds were recovered.
