Two Arrested over $9.3m Airport Bag Snatch

August 07, 23 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - Two men have been arrested after a bag containing $9.3m of jewelry was stolen from passengers checking in for an Emirates flight from Barcelona's El Prat airport.

The stolen Hermes Birkin Bag contained a 47 carat diamond ring valued at $4.93m, a Chanel brooch ($822,000), diamond earrings ($548,000), a Bvlgari watch ($986,000) and $11,000 in cash.

The bag belonged to a Russian couple who didn't immediately realize it had been stolen.

Catalan police say two suspects driving a rental car were arrested in the city of Salt after they were identified from security camera footage at the airport.

All the stolen goods were recovered. Police said the suspects threw the most valuable item, the diamond ring, from the car just before they were arrested.

Catalonia Police said: "Luggage with high-end jewelry and money stolen from passengers in the check-in area of El Prat airport.

"Thanks to the rapid investigation management, we located the vehicle in which they fled."
