Prada Launches Lab Grown Collection

October 19, 23 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - Prada has launched its first jewelry collection featuring lab grown diamonds.

The luxury Italian fashion house says it uses gems that are grown to order in the new edition of its Eternal Gold collection, and has them "Prada-cut" in the shape of its triangular logo

It also says it is now committed to using lab growns across all its fine jewelry collections by the end of the year.

Prada's jewelry director Timothy Iwata told the Washington Post: "It's not just about customizing some existing material. We actually grow that material for the client.

"You don't get your own crocodile grown to become your bag."

Prada is following in the footsteps of two LVMH companies, which have both embraced lab growns.

In April TAG Heuer launched a $376,000 Carrera Plasma watch, with a 2.5-ct lab grown in the shape of the crown and 9.5 more carats of lab growns.

Last month Fred presented its Force 10 Duality high jewelry set - a necklace, bracelet, ring, single earring and a loose 8.88-carat diamond costing $559,000.
