India's Polished Export Down by a Third

November 16, 23 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - India's polished diamond exports for October were down 25 per cent on September, and down 33 per cent on the same month last year, according to the latest figures from the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC).

But there is no monthly breakdown of rough imports to indicate how much manufacturers are abiding by a voluntary two-month ban which started on 15 October. GJEPC only said that imports for April to October were down by 18 per cent.

Overall gross exports of polished diamonds in October were $1.26bn, compared to $1.67bn in September.

Lab grown exports were down by 24 per cent during the month, much the same as their natural counterparts.

India's total exports of all gems and jewelry fell 12 per cent to $2.75bn.
