IDEX Price Report for 1 December: A Glimmer of Hope

December 01, 23 by IDEX Online

(IDEX Online) - Rounds and fancies both showed some signs of improvements during November, following on from the early signs of a possible recovery that we saw in October. After two years of relentless decline there finally seems to be at least a glimmer of hope. Diwali is behind us, but Christmas and Hannukah are approaching and sales are picking up as we enter peak season. Jewelry, together with apparel, were the biggest winners on Black Friday, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse, with overall spending up 2.5 per cent on last year.

Budgets remain tight so positive movement is concentrated among the smaller sizes. Larger goods, particularly rounds, are still suffering losses.
Meanwhile rough supplies are being squeezed and India's voluntary ban on rough imports is having a stabilizing effect on prices, according to the GJEPC (Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council). The prospect of G7 sanctions looms large, as it has for many months now, and demand for lab growns keeps increasing.

Rounds

Rounds suffered more losses overall, particularly among 1.50-cts-5.99-cts goods, but not the blanket coverage we have seen in recent months. There were small pockets of price rises in many sizes.

Fancies

Fancies performed less well than in recent months, with losses in many sizes, especially among better colors and clarities. The most notable exception was among 4.00-4.99-cts, where price increases dominated among G-M / IF-SI3. But in most sizes from 0.45-cts to 3.99-cts prices were down for I+ and VS2+. There was very little movement in goods under 1.30-cts.
