GIA Launches Enhanced Jade Reports

January 02, 24 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - Enhanced grading reports for jade, one of the priciest gemstones, have been launched by GIA.

It says its new Jade Report provides greater depth and clarity and includes the type of jade (A, B or C) as well as the species - nephrite or jadeite.

The commonly-used trade term "Fei Cui" will be listed in the comments section when appropriate with the explanatory note stating that "Fei Cui" refers to jadeite, omphacite, and kosmochlor.

Jadeite is among the rarest and most valuable of all gemstones. Last August a necklace set with 35 green jadeite beads and 7.70-cts of white diamonds (pictured) sold for $2.3m at Sotheby's Hong Kong.

In 2014, a jadeite bead necklace that belonged to Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton sold for $27.4 m at Sotheby's auction, setting a world-record for any jadeite item.

"We made these improvements to our 'Jade Report' recognizing its history, symbolism and overall importance to consumers," said Tom Moses, executive vice president and chief laboratory and research officer at GIA.
