(IDEX Online) - A 41.02-carat fancy intense yellow diamond sold for $1.02m at a Sotheby's New York sale of jewels from a mystery collector.

The natural color, VS2 clarity stone (pictured) was among the highlights of From the Vault Exceptional Signed Jewels, on 7 March. The estimate was $800,000 to $1.2m.

The sale realized a total of $8.4m, although many lots - almost 50 per cent  - were unsold.

A Van Cleef & Arpels gold and diamond zipper necklace-bracelet combination and pair of earclips, circa 1950, sold for $482,600 (estimate $400,000 to $600,000).

An Asprey fancy vivid yellow diamond and diamond necklace and pair of earrings, with an estimate of $2m to $3m, was withdrawn from the sale.

The auction included 81 pieces by Van Cleef & Arpels, 43 pieces by Cartier, and 21 pieces each by David Webb and Bulgari. The owner requested anonymity.
