Expensive Typo: $14,000 Cartier Earrings Sell for Just $14

May 02, 24 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - A customer paid just $14 for a pair of Cartier gold and diamond earrings, thanks to a typo on the jeweler's website. The real price was $14,000.

Rogelio Villarreal, 27, from Mexico, had never even heard of the iconic French jeweler, but clicked through to the site after an ad popped up on his Instagram feed.

He was taken aback by the high prices, but then spotted a pair of 18-carat rose-gold Clash de Cartier earrings listed at just 237 pesos ($14) and decided they were such a bargain he would order two pairs.

Cartier soon realized there'd been an unfortunate - and very expensive - typo. They repeatedly told him the earrings were out of stock, then offered him champagne and a leather item as compensation.

But Villarreal didn't accept defeat and took his case to Mexico's federal consumer protection agency, which ruled that Cartier must honor the price, even if was a mistake.

"I'm excited, especially for my mom," Villarreal told the New York Times. "Those earrings are for her."
