Rocksbox Ditches Jewelry Rental Service

July 03, 24 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - Rocksbox, the jewelry rental company, is to end its monthly subscription service and switch to online sales only.

The US-based company launched in 2012, providing subscribers with three rented pieces of fashion jewelry (mostly priced at $50 to $150) for a fixed fee $21 a month, with an option to buy.

Signet bought the company for an undisclosed sum in April 2021, saying it was "complementary to our traditional offerings".

But Rocksbox now says customers are increasingly interested in buying items outright rather than renting.

"The subscription [model] now instead of being a fresh way to discover, feels a little bit like a barrier to accessibility," president Allison Vigil told WWD.

The subscription service will close at the end of August and Rocksbox will focus on selling new and second-hand jewelry instead.
