$1.2m Faberge Egg Reveals 5ct Ruby

July 07, 24 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - Gemfields has showcased its latest Faberge egg, an intricately crafted $1.2m creation which opens to reveal a square five-carat ruby, set in a removable rose gold filigree-like sphere.

It has been named Malaika, the word for "angel" in Swahili, one of the languages spoken in Mozambique, home to the Gemfields  Montepuez ruby mine.

It has been crafted by a small team of artisans in England, from 4,312 round brilliant-cut white diamonds and 252 round brilliant-cut brown diamonds, 308 rubies., 421 round pink sapphires and 61 amethysts, all set in 18k rose gold with guilloche enamelling.

Gemfields, the UK-based gemstone miner acquired the iconic Faberge brand in 2013. It was founded by Gustav Faberge in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1842.

Faberge will donate $100,000 from the sale price to the Gemfields Foundation, which works to alleviate poverty in Mozambique.

In March, Faberge launched a limited edition of 50 green enamel 007 Octopussy Egg Objets, inspired by the James Bond film, and costing $145,000 each.
