8X Certificates Launched for Pear and Marquise
December 08, 24(IDEX Online) - The New York-based GCAL by Sarine lab is now issuing its enhanced 8X Cut Grades certificates for pears and marquise, in addition to round, oval and princess.
It introduced the 8X certs in 2021 to provide consumers with "a higher level of transparency" providing what it says is the most comprehensive and stringent assessment of specialty diamond cuts.
Pears, marquise and other fancy shapes are assessed for eight attributes - polish, external symmetry, proportions, optical brilliance, fire, scintillation, optical symmetry and shape aesthetics.
"Creating parameters for cutting 8X Marquise and Pear shapes was more challenging than we anticipated," said Angelo Palmieri, president at GCAL by Sarine.
"There were critical factors that played into how the stone performs, but our focus remained the same - maximizing light return, while minimizing the bow tie.
"The 8X standard represents an objective, science-based system that certifies a diamond as "super ideal" across the five shapes we've developed standards for (round, oval, princess and now pear and marquise)."
The lab plans to start issuing 8X certificates for radiant, cushion and emerald cuts as well in the near future.
Erick Castille, head of the 8X development team, said: "We were once again able to take advantage of the vast wealth of analytical images and data from every marquise and pear shape diamond that has passed through the GCAL lab since opening in 2000 … to determine which specific proportion combinations most correlated with top-tier light performance."
