Record Breakers: The Unwearable Gold Earrings

January 29, 25 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - A jewelry retailer in India has created the world's heaviest pair of gold earrings, weighing in at a completely unwearable 3.527kg (7 lbs 12 oz).

That's the weight of an average newborn baby.

Each of the jhumkas - traditional Indian bell-shaped earrings - has been intricately carved with 500 elephants, inspired by the legend of a 1,000-elephant procession at a royal wedding.

GRT Jewellers, which has over 40 stores in India and beyond, has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records for the world's heaviest gold earrings. They mark the company's 60th anniversary.

The 22K gold alone cost over $300,000, not to mention the thousands of hours of labor in crafting the earrings.

Most jewelry designers recommend earrings weighing no more than 4 grams (0.14 ounce) for comfortable, long-term wear.
