Alrosa Cuts its Biggest Ever Colored Diamond

April 08, 25 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - Alrosa says it has completed the two-year process of cutting the largest colored diamond ever recovered from a Russian mine.

The 236-carat fancy vivid yellow stone was unearthed from an ancient riverbed at the Ebelyakh mine, in the far east republic of Sakha (Yakutia)in August 2020.

Alrosa chose to cut the stone itself rather than sell it on and says a team of 15 top s top diamond cutters worked meticulously to "achieve the perfect balance between light, color and the play of shades".

In a press statement the Russian miner said: "The masters of the Alrosa Cutting Complex faced a special task - to choose the shape and parameters of cutting, polishing and symmetry that would best reveal the color and shine inherent in nature, while maximally preserving the record size of the diamond."

However it neglected to disclose the size, cut or clarity of the polished gem, which it has named the New Sun, or how or when it would be sold.
