Jewelry Customer "Spent $160,000 in Movie Money"
August 31, 25
(IDEX Online) - A jewelry store customer was arrested after paying $160,000 for goods with "movie money" designed for film sets.
Devin Johnson, of Tennessee, USA, is alleged to have handed over bundles of cash - marked "In Props We Trust" - to buy a rose gold and diamond chain valued at $50,000 and two Rolex watches valued at $45,000 and $23,000.
He and another man bought the items from Victoria Jewelry, in Boston, in April, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.
The unknown accomplice reportedly displayed one of the watches on Instagram, tagging Johnson with the message: "We made history bro."
Suffolk County DA Kevin Hayden said: "The facts here outline an incredibly audacious scheme to purchase real jewelry—and hugely expensive jewelry at that—with phony money, which eventually came undone through thorough, tenacious work by Boston police detectives."
Johnson is due to appear in court on 23 September. The second man has yet to be arraigned.
