Antwerp Sends Aid for Botswana's Medical Crisis
September 09, 25
(IDEX Online) - Antwerp's diamond industry is sending financial help to ease Botswana's ongoing public health emergency.
The world's second biggest diamond-producing country is suffering dire shortages of essential medicines after diamond revenues halved last year and the US cut aid.
President Duma Boko declared the public health emergency on 25 August and said he was reallocating $348m from other government funds to help buy and distribute vital supplies.
Diamond companies in Antwerp, with close and long-standing links with Botswana, are working closely with Botswana's minerals and mines minister Joy Bogolo Kenewendo, to offer assistance through the AWDC (Antwerp World Diamond Centre).
So far the following companies are involved:, Andre Messika, Anita Diamonds, Bonas Group, Choron - AMC, Dali Diamond, Dharm Diam, Ferrari, HB Antwerp, Malca Amit, Pluczenik, Rosy Blue, Rubel & Menasche, Samir Gems, Sheetal, Shivam, Tache, Veediam.
"This is more than a donation drive, it is an act of solidarity for a nation where our shared story begins," AWDC said in a statement.
"Each donor shares a deep, personal bond with Botswana, a country that is not only the source of some of the world's most exceptional diamonds but also a partner, offering opportunities and mutual respect."
Botswana's military has been brought in to help distribute medical supplies to more remote parts of the country.
The health ministry says medicines are in short supply for treating hypertension, cancers, diabetes, eye conditions, asthma, sexual and reproductive health concerns, tuberculosis, and mental health conditions.
To donate, please contact Ahalya Choksi at AWDC by Friday 12 September.
