Sotheby's Hong Kong Offers $2.6m Ruby Earrings

(IDEX Online) - A pair of Burmese ruby and diamond earrings estimated at up to HKD 20 million (USD 2.6 million) will headline Sotheby's Hong Kong High Jewelry auction on September 17.

The pear-shaped ruby earrings, weighing 5.20 and 5.08 carats, are set with rose-cut diamonds in 18-karat white gold. Sotheby's estimates the pair at HKD 11.5 million to HKD 20 million (USD 1.5 million to USD 2.6 million).

The rubies are accompanied by reports from the Swiss gemological laboratories SSEF and Gubelin identifying them as Burmese and stating that there are no indications of heating. SSEF describes the stones as "pigeon blood red."

The Hong Kong auction features jewelry and gemstones from houses including Cartier, Harry Winston and Graff, alongside colored stones.

Other leading lots include a Burmese ruby ring featuring a 5.06-carat ruby and approximately 5 carats of diamonds, estimated at HKD 8.8 million to HKD 16 million (USD 1.1 million to USD 2 million).

A Harry Winston ring and necklace set centered on a 25.09-carat Colombian emerald and approximately 36 carats of marquise-shaped diamonds carries an estimate of HKD 8 million to HKD 15 million (USD 1 million to USD 1.9 million).

Another Harry Winston offering comprises earrings featuring Colombian emeralds weighing 16.27 and 17.03 carats, surrounded and suspended by pear- and marquise-shaped diamonds. The estimate is HKD 7 million to HKD 15 million (USD 893,000 to USD 1.9 million).

A Mauboussin necklace dating to around 1930, incorporating Burmese rubies and approximately 12 carats of diamonds, is estimated at HKD 9.5 million to HKD 11 million (USD 1.2 million to USD 1.4 million).

The Sotheby's sale is part of a broader Hong Kong High Jewelry offering running from September 3 through September 17. The offering includes signed jewelry and colored gemstones including alexandrite, sapphire, Paraiba tourmaline and spinel.
