Take It to the Max: Absolutely Charming

February 04, 08 by Danielle Max

When I go to art galleries, I like to spend time picking out the one picture that, if I had enough money, I would buy. I do the same thing at trade shows and walk around making a mental shopping list of pieces to fill my jewelry box.

Rosato's New York charms
Currently, I'm in what I would call my kitsch period, so it didn't really surprise me that the piece that I most wanted at the recent show in
Vicenza was a charm bracelet from the Italian firm Rosato.

This is a company that takes charms pretty seriously. As well as offering charms of bags, shoes, boots and whatever else you can think off, charms even adorn many of the rings and pendants – charms within charms as it were – though they do have some items that are charm free.

Detail of Rosato's New York charms

Walking around their huge booth, I was especially taken with the new City Collection. The charms in this collection represent three of the world's major fashion cities: Paris, Milan and New York, though there are possible plans to immortalize London and Moscow in miniature. I can already envisage the mini matryoshkas (Russian doll), a charm that the company already produces in another of their lines, and the tiny Big Bens.

Stefania Marchesi, Rosato press officer, says the pieces are inspired by the "melting pot of trends, moods and colours" of these cities. What she forgot to say is that also seem to be inspired by the food of each city. Paris is represented by, what else, a baguette and croissant, Milan by ice cream and a pasta and New York by an apple. (I can only assume that London will have to have fish and chips, though I don't know what constitutes traditional Russian food).

Rosato's Paris charms

Other charms with a Parisian theme include a Chanel-style dress, a Place Vendome shopping bag, a babette (a type of shoe), and a champagne flute. The Milan charms range from a perfect little Italian sandal to a handbag by Montenapoleone and a Dolce&Gabbana-style dress, while the New York collection includes a baseball, a Manolo Blanik-style shoe and a 5th Avenue shopping bag.

One of the most appealing aspects of charm bracelets is that they can be tailored to each buyer's taste. The charms in the City Collections can be bought in a "pick and mix" way, making it possible to have an entire baguette bracelet, a bracelet dedicated to fashion, or a purple bracelet. As Marchesi says, "Rosato is a very young and versatile brand. Our aim is to express the funniness and amusement in jewelry."

The 18 karat gold and enamel charms cost from €210 to €245 ($311 to $364) allowing those who have a mini budget to build up their collection over time.
