According to initial reports, the would-be bombers were making their way into the basement of the Panchratna building when their behavior aroused the suspicions of the building’s security staff. They apparently attempted to flee when questioned and were chased and apprehended.
They police and bomb squad, who were immediately alerted, arrived in short order and took charge of them. The bomb was then located and defused. Police meanwhile cordoned off the entire area and conducted an extensive search for any more possible bombs.
In July 2011, a bomb exploded in the Opera House area, a second went off in the nearby gold and jewellery district of Zaveri Bazaar, while a third ripped through the crowded mid-town Dadar area. The blasts left 21people dead and over a hundred injured, many critically.
