San Francisco Jeweler Closes after 172 Years

May 19, 24 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - The oldest jewelry store in the state of California, USA, is closing its doors after 172 years.

Shreve & Co has been trading in San Francisco since1852 after George C. Shreve and his nephew joined the California Gold Rush.

The business flourished - and went on to survive a devastating earthquake in 1906. It had moved just a month earlier to an earthquake-proof building.

The company has relocated several times and is currently based in the city's Union Square.

Shreve said in a press release that the closure of its flagship store was part of a "strategic retooling of the company's business plan." It will retain its one remaining store, in  Palo Alto, just over 30 miles away.
