Bonhams Sells Harry Winston Diamonds

May 28, 24 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - A Harry Winston 29.29-carat marquise-cut diamond ring, with a pre-sale estimate of $1.3m to $1.9m, will lead Bonhams annual New York Jewels auction next week.

They Type IIa diamond (D color, VVS2 clarity) is flanked by tapered-baguette cut diamonds, and is signed by Winston, the King of Diamonds, who died in 1978.

The ring is dated 1967 and it is one of several premier lots that come from a spectacular collection belonging to "a distinguished European family," including several Winston pieces.

Among the other Winston items in the 177-lot sale are a sapphire and diamond ring, featuring a cushion-cut 25.51-carat sapphire from Ceylon (estimate $250,000 to $350,000) and a diamond bracelet, with two central large round brilliant-cut diamonds weighing 4.64 carats with a remaining total diamond weight of 31.30 carats (estimate $180,000-280,000).

Caroline Morrissey, Bonhams director and head of jewelry, New York, said: "We are privileged to present such a wonderful offering in the New York Jewels sale, led by the spectacular collection from a distinguished European family.

"This exquisitely curated collection features not only two magnificent diamonds, a 29.29 carat Harry Winston marquise, and a 28.19 carat elongated step-cut, but a treasured assortment of elegant jewels featuring designs by Harry Winston, Fred Paris, and Van Cleef & Arpels."
