Diamond Fields Wins Liberian Diamond and Gold Concessions

April 29, 04 by Albert Robinson

Diamond Fields International said it has secured two mineral search licenses in Liberia, one of which is a diamond prospect and the other a gold prospect.

Diamond Fields said it obtained the concessions as a result of increasing political stability in the region that has long been under explored and believes the country has a strong mineral potential.

The Nimba diamond concession covers around 2,000 square km in Nimba County in northeast Liberia and has extensive artisanal alluvial diamond workings along Ya Creek and its tributaries. Diamond Fields will focus its exploration efforts on the search for a source kimberlite.

Meanwhile, the Cestos Belt gold concession covers approximately 1,300 square km in River Cess and Sinoe Counties.

Diamond Fields said a large-scale heavy mineral stream sediment sampling program will occur in the Nimba concession, and a soil sampling and mapping program will be undertaken in the Cestos Belt concession. Further work will be based on results from this initial program.

Gregg J. Sedun, President and CEO of Diamond Fields, said: "We are excited about the opportunity of being an early mover in a country with as much mineral potential as Liberia. The trend towards political stability now occurring in this geologically exciting region presents us with enormous potential not only in our search for diamonds, but also in a new mineral, gold, now being added to our portfolio of projects."
