Canada Repeals Jewelry Tax

March 07, 05 by Albert Robinson

The Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA) told the annual congress of the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO) that the Canadian government has repealed a 10 percent jewelry excise tax.

Carmen Rivet, the President of CJA, told the congress in Hong Kong that CIBJO had helped in the battle against the tax that led, according to her, to the loss of jobs in Canada by forcing businesses to close and set up operations overseas.

Gaetano Cavalieri, CIBJO’s President, said the tax was "counterproductive and unfair. This tax was highly discriminatory. It meant Canada could not compete in the making of jewelry, nor could its retailers offer jewelry to Canadians and tourists at a fair price.”
