IDEX Poll: The EU Should Approve DB, Alrosa Agreement

August 25, 05 by Edahn Golan

Should the European Union Approve the De Beers – Alrosa trade agreement? According to the latest online poll by IDEX Online, the answer is an overwhelming yes.

61 percent of respondents to the weekly IDEX Online poll said the European Union should approve the De Beers – Alrosa five year, $4 billion rough diamond trade agreement.

29 percent of respondents object to the agreement and 10 percent of respondents to the poll answered “I really don’t know”.

The trade agreement was signed back in December 2001 and has never been approved by the EU, which has voiced objections to the agreement in January 2003. Since that time the EU’s Competition Commission has been discussing the agreement but has not decided on its fate.
