Diamdel to Form Central Sorting Facility in Israel

June 29, 06 by Edahn Golan

Diamdel Israel will open a sorting facility in the country that will serve all Diamdel offices, revealed Diamond Trading Company (DTC) managing director Varda Shine this morning. Diamdel, a rough diamond trading company, is part of the De Beers group of companies.

Until now the various Diamdel offices worked fairly independently of each other. The change in policy, one of many similar changes in the company, is part of an efficiency process the company is going through, a source in Diamdel told IDEX Online.

Other changes include centralized management. The formation of a single sorting center will allow the company to serve their clients better and more accurately, the source said, adding that it is part of the general De Beers policy of examination and improvement.

Shine recently noted that the request from Sightholders to become more efficient has not skipped De Beers.

Diamdel has seven regional offices, in Antwerp, Hong Kong, Namibia, Shanghai, Johannesburg, Mumbai, and Israel.

Diamdel Israel imported $145 million worth of rough diamonds in the past year, selling the goods to about 100 regular and ‘walk-in’ clients in Israel, among them members of their young producers program.

The new center, scheduled to open in January 2007, will sort over $650 million worth of rough diamonds.
