UN Wants Update on Ivory Coast Rough Diamonds Embargo

September 17, 06 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

The UN Security Council has extended the mandate of the three-person team it had created to monitor the arms embargo in the Ivory Coast until December 15. The extension comes after the council determined that the situation in Ivory Coast continues to constitute a threat to international peace and security.

The Council also requested an update on the implementation of resolution 1643 (2005), which, among other things, requires states to prevent the import of all rough diamonds from Ivory Coast to their territory. The resolution describes any serious obstacle to the freedom of movement of the United Nations Operation in Ivory Coast (UNOCI) and that of the French forces that support it as a threat to the country’s peace and national reconciliation process.
