Turkey Admitted to Kimberley Process

The Kimberley Process has admitted Turkey after determination that it had met minimum requirements for membership. The country applied for admittance when the scheme was launched but was turned down in 2003 along with another 22 other countries that did not meet requirements.
As a member of KP, Turkey will be allowed to import and export rough diamonds, giving it an opportunity to form a diamond polishing sector that could strengthen its thriving gold jewelry manufacturing.
The current list of KP participants includes 47 countries (see complete list here).
According to the KP Secretariat, Tunisia is currently a candidate to join the list, while Taiwan has already met the minimum requirements of the KPCS and will probably be admitted in the near future.
