Dubai Shopping Festival Plans Unveiled in Mumbai

January 07, 08 by A Jewelbiz India Report

The Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF), promoted as “The Fifth Season” that only Dubai will be privy to, “represents the combination of three features: shopping, family entertainment and winning,” according to its marketing coordinator, Saeed Al Mehairi.

Speaking at a press conference Monday that was dubbed as the “India launch” of the DSF, Al Mehairi and Chandu Siroya, vice chairman of the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group, unveiled plans for the 13th edition of the event.

The festival, to be held January 24-February 24, began in 1996 and today aims to accelerate growth on the retail and tourism front. Over the years, it has attracted some 28.35 million visitors, who have collectively spent AED 54.1 billion ($8.48 billion).

While Dubai is by now well known as a shopping destination, festival organizers have over the years added a large dose of family entertainment, putting together a scintillating array of prizes.

This year, the prizes included a kilo of gold awarded daily, for a total of 32 kilos; 90 Lexus cars; a Nissan car per day. One winner can also win three Nissan cars in weekend draws, as well as 100,000 in cash every day, with a lucky draw determining the currency in which the winner gets it (pounds, dollars, euros or dirhams). The total value of prizes is estimated at AED 30 million ($4.7 million).

Speaking on its close relation with the festival, Siroya said that DG&JG is the largest sponsor of the event and had been associated with it since its inception. About 700 retailers will be participating this year, offering a range of products including gold and diamond jewelry.
