12.6% Decline In Japan’s Imports of Polished Diamonds in 2007

Japan imported $881.25 million worth of polished diamonds in 2007, a 12.6 percent decline compared to 2006. India, Belgium and Israel – Japan’s leading suppliers, have all seen their exports to Japan decline by 12 -15 percent.

In volume, Japan imported 2,298,090 carats in 2007, a 15.1 percent decline in volume. The average value of imports in 2007 reached $383.47 per carat (p/c), rising from $372.61 p/c in 2006.

India was the source of $382.47 million worth of goods weighing 1,699,583 carats, averaging $225.04 p/c.

Belgium shipped $203.85 million worth of polished diamonds weighing 182,564 carats ($1,117 p/c) followed by Israel, which sent $103.52 million in diamonds weighing 88,628 carats ($1,168 p/c).

In December, Japan’s imports declined 18.8 percent in value to $51.37 million on imports of 152,928 carats – a 20 percent decline in volume.
