Rough Diamonds Confiscated at Israeli Airport

August 04, 08 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

Customs authorities at Israel's Ben Gurion Airport confiscated during the weekend rough diamonds from a man trying to smuggle the goods into the country. According to Customs, the goods are worth more than $200,000.

The man, identified as Tangis Kikinashvilli – a citizen of Georgia – raised the suspicion of Customs agents as he walked through Customs’ green channel. A search of his suitcase revealed the goods, which were not accompanied by Kimberley Process certificates.

The man is not known to be a member of a diamond exchange and, according to Israeli law, is not allowed to trade in rough diamonds.
