New and Renewed Exhibitions at GIA Museum

August 05, 09 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

Two new exhibitions at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) are currently on show. One called "Facets of GIA" is a renewed exhibition, with new items rotated into the display on a regular basis. At present there are over 130 pieces on view, including gem crystals, gemstones, gem art objects, jewelry, equipment and books.

The second exhibit titled “Little & Large,” showcases seven local San Diego artists—in cooperation with the San Diego Visual Arts Network. Over 100 artists will display an item of jewelry, "little" and a sculpture, "large" at more than 40 venues located throughout San Diego County.

Among the impressive items in the Facets of GIA exhibit is a ruby and diamond necklace and earrings set, containing 39 natural, unheated Burmese rubies set with 302 diamonds. According to Terri Ottaway, curator of the GIA Museum, a captivating feature of this suite is the exceptional and strong red fluorescent glow under UV light displayed by the rubies.

According to the San Diego Visual Arts Network, the artists’ works are designed to reflect inspiration from the upcoming Alexander Calder jewelry exhibition at the San Diego Museum of Art. Calder is well-known for his larger-scale sculptures and mobiles, though less so for his jewelry pieces.

GIA Museum visits are free but require a scheduled tour. Visitors can sign up by contacting guestservices@gia.edu or calling (800) 421-7250, ext. 4116, visitors outside of the U.S. should call (760) 603-4116. Additional information about the GIA can be found at www.gia.edu.
