IIJS 2009 Opens Under Heavy Security

August 06, 09 by Edahn Golan, Mumbai

The India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) 2009 opened Thursday, with a market in deep anticipation for signs of a recovering market – in the form of healthy sales. According to Vasant Mehta, chairman of organizers GJEPC, all eyes are currently on the local retail market.

Heavy security measures, including several layers of checkpoints are the norm, not just at the IIJS venue, but also at the hotels hosting the guests. Show organizers are clearly weary of possible terrorist attacks, far more than theft.

The show was inaugurated by chief minister of Maharashtra, Ashok Shankarrao Chavan, under scoring the importance of the show and local diamond trade to the state.

With decent first day traffic was, with more than 6,300 visitors according to GJEPC, exhibitors reported good sales. Exhibitors expect traffic to pick up during the weekend.

According to GJEPC figures, the show has 715 exhibitors.
