'Evening Star Diamond' Headlines Christie's Auction

November 15, 09 by Edon Ophir

The Evening Star Diamond (above) is expected to sell for $3.6-5.5 million dollars.

Christie's announced last week that the "Evening Star Diamond," a pear-shaped 39 carat, D color diamond from a private collection, will lead its December Jewels Sale in New York.

With an estimated value between $3.6-$5.5 million, the Evening Star Diamond will be the highlight of a special auction that will immediately follow the larger New York Jewels Sale on December 10. Christie's said the sale is expected to realize in excess of $10 million.

In addition to the Evening Star Diamond, other rare items to be featured will include a classic Art Deco bracelet by Van Cleef & Arpels, set with five old-European-cut diamonds on a diamond foliate band that is estimated at $100,000-$150,000, as well as a diamond ring mounted in platinum with a 36.78 carat, rectangular-cut, D color, internally flawless diamond that is estimated $2.75-$3.5 million.

The Evening Star Diamond hails from India's ancient Golconda mines, the source of many of the world's exceptional diamonds, including the Hope Diamond. The Evening Star Diamond received its name from its owner's custom of wearing the sparkling gem to her most important evening events and galas.
