U.S. Rough Diamond Imports Revived in March

May 13, 10 by Edahn Golan

The U.S. imported $45.1 million worth of rough diamonds in March and exported $20 million worth of goods, leaving it with net imports of $25.1 million. This is a tripling in the level of net imports compared to March 2009 and double the level compared to February of this year.

In terms of volume, gross imports rose 44.5 percent to 47,616 carats, while exports jumped 217.8 percent to 83,427 carats of rough. As many times before, the U.S. somehow succeeded in importing more than it exported in terms of value, but had a negative import level in terms of volume - down by 35,811 carats.

The average value of gross imports was a high $946.66 per carat, while exports averaged $239.10 p/c.

South Africa was the leading rough supplier, shipping $21.4 million worth of rough at an average value of $1,698.65 p/c. Belgium was the leading destination of exports, $8.2 million at an average of $265.79 p/c.
