Market Report for the week ending June 23, 2011

The global diamond wholesale sector is focused on the June Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair that opened Thursday. Conventional wisdom holds that the once smallish show will prove that the market is hot.

 

U.S.

The market in New York City continues to be very busy, and polished prices keep increasing due to the double digit increases in rough prices. Solid demands are most noted for 1/5-3/4 cts in SI qualities.

An active trading week in Mumbai led traders to push prices upwards, with the understanding that the global consumer market will accept it. The expectation from the Hong Kong show is that it will result in a pick up in business.

A slow down in activity is felt in the Israeli diamond market, with many traders away participating at the Hong Kong show. Certain shortages are noted, possibly because of the large amount of goods shipped to trade fair. The general mood is good even tough price keep rising and buyers are finding it difficult to pay the new prices.
