India's Rough Diamond Imports Surge in April

– India's rough diamond imports jumped 20.3 percent in April, an unexpected increase taking place when polished diamond trading is very quiet.

 

India imported $1.58 billion worth of rough in April, up 8.4 percent compared to March, based on figures published by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC).

 

The volume of imports also increased, up 42.2 percent to 14.2 million carats. The average value of imports totaled $111.41 per carat.

 

Rough diamond exports or 2.25 million carats worth $115.3 million declined 9.6 percent by volume and increased 21.2 percent by value compared to April 2011.

 

Compared to March, the value of imports fell 49.7 percent.
