Lonhro Recovers 131.5 Carat Diamond in Angola

August 21, 12 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

(IDEX Online News) – Australian Securities Exchange (ASX)-listed Lonrho Mining has recovered a 131.5 carat diamond from the Lulo Concession in north-eastern Angola. The company also announced the recovery of a 38.3 carat diamond.

According to a press release, the diamond is the white diamond is the largest diamond recovered by Lonrho since the Perth-based company began treating alluvial gravels through its Dense Media Separation plant at the Lulo project in 2010. The 38.3-carat stone is the third-biggest diamond recovered at the project.

Lonrho managing director Miles Kennedy said the latest recoveries underline the world-class exploration potential of the Lulo Concession. “The recovery of such a spectacular 131.5 carat diamond in particular highlights both the prospectivity of the diamondiferous gravels in the Cacuilo River valley and, more significantly, the kimberlite pipe that has shed this stone,” said Kennedy.

“Given the incredible size of this diamond, there is little doubt the kimberlite source is very close by,” he added.

The Lulo Diamond concession is a highly prospective 3,000 square kilometer diamond concession. It is operated as is operated as a joint venture between Lonrho and the government-owned diamond company Endiama, which is the exclusive concessionary for Angolan diamond mining rights.
