JA Seeks Global Industry Support for KP Reform Proposals

In an open letter to companies in the jewelry industry, JA is calling for support for the following:

·         A commitment not to supply diamonds connected to violence or conflict in any way.

·         Asking their suppliers not to do business with those connected with violence or conflict in any way.

·         Asking their governments to support KP reform proposals such as the expansion of the definition of conflict diamonds.

The letter, co-signed by heads of key organizations and companies who constitute the JA, says that for a number of consumers in the U.S., a KP certificate is no longer enough to guarantee that a diamond is conflict-free.

 

It says that the relevance of the KP will continue to erode and would result in gaps in consumer confidence that would harm the industry.

Failing adequate reform, the letter warns, governments could turn to restrictive legislations. It cites the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act as an example of restrictive legislation.
