Hopes Pinned on Domestic Sales Driven by Bridal Demand

December 03, 12 by Vinay Parekh

Diwali this year didn’t bring the usual lift in movement and accompanying firmer prices that it usually does. Dealers said trading continued at routine levels. Most dealers were, nevertheless, happy with the way the festival went. The market had stabilized considerably and the fears of a complete crash in the months running up to the festival had receded.

With a long marriage season ahead – from November to February with the exception of two weeks in January – the Mumbai polished diamond sector is now focused on the domestic market, as it offered the best hope of sustained sales over the next few months.

As fresh polished goods would not arrive in the market until the end of December, initial post-Diwali sales were dependent on existing stocks. This means that prices are expected to remain relatively stable until the end of the year.

A fluctuating rupee-dollar exchange rate continued to cause a fair amount of worry but overall sentiment was very positive.
