GPS Devices Aim to Raise Stolen Jewelry Recovery Rate

June 14, 13 by Albert Robinson

(IDEX Online News) – A Canadian jewelry firm has created a novel way of tracking stolen jewelry in real time using GPS technology which it says will dramatically increase the chances of retrieving the stolen items.

Jerome Reilander, owner of JayLyn Jewellers, a high-end custom jewelry store located in Victoria, Canada, has lost more than $100,000 worth of inventory from his shop through smashed showcases over the past 30 years.

Current security methods mean that only 44 percent of stolen jewelry is recovered. "Like other jewelers, I have spent thousands of dollars on heavy-duty safes, alarm systems, security cameras, and other prevention methods. Yet the incidences of crime are increasing and less than half of us will ever have that inventory returned," says Reilander.

After falling victim for the fourth time in his career, Reilander founded EyeSpy Security which aims to ensure the full recovery of stolen jewelry.

Reilander and his team have developed a security solution that uses advanced GPS tracking technology and innovative "bait" packaging to track and recover stolen goods.

"Our technology is completely enclosed within a jewelry display so that it blends in seamlessly with your existing inventory," says Reilander, "In a robbery situation, the tracking device acts as "bait", enabling you to precisely track and catch the perpetrator as he makes his getaway."

Customers can order multiple tracking devices which can be planted in a range of locations, including in showcases, among warehouse stock and in safes. They can also be placed in bags and briefcases when transporting high-value items.

Then, using an account on any computer or smartphone, the location of the devices – and the stolen jewelry is easily followed.

Users can also check on retail store showcases or warehouse inventory to ensure that nothing has been disturbed, or observe the movement of your travelling sales rep over the previous 24 hours. The devices will alert you via text message when they have been disturbed to ensure you can act immediately.

EyeSpy Security carried out an official launch of its product at the JCK Show Las Vegas earlier this month and said it has already registered wide-scale interest in the innovative security system.
