– Two robbers carried out a robbery at the flagship Cartier jewelry store on the Champs Elysees in Paris on Tuesday evening, firing at police as they fled the scene on a scooter with the police returning fire. News reports said the robbers has an AK-47 and a pistol.

They dragged a woman from the boutique at gunpoint, then let her go outside.

After a police chase, the robbers took refuge in a nearby hair salon, where they took the manager hostage, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Police cordoned off a large area during a standoff that lasted almost two hours while a helicopter circled overhead.

The manager was later safely released after negotiations with police, the Interior Ministry said. The gunmen surrendered and the stolen jewels were recovered, it added.
