Gold and Jewelry Valuation Counter Opens at New Delhi Airport

January 12, 15 by Danielle Max

(IDEX Online News) – The Indian customs department has opened a valuation counter at Indira Gandhi International airport in New Delhi counter to appraise gold and other jewelry. The department has also issued detailed declaration guidelines.

"Passenger must state the purpose of visit abroad and submit an undertaking to re-import the same jewelry," the guidelines state, as reported by The Economic Times.

In addition, incoming flyers must submit a copy of their invoice or legal document establishing the ownership of items being declared by them. "If no such document is available, an affidavit stating the source of jewelry, ownership and value must be submitted," it said.

The counter will issue passengers with jewelry appraisal certificates that can be shown to customs officials upon their return. The new system means that travelers will not be charged duty on jewelry they already own.

Until now, passengers had to travel about 30 kilometers from the airport to declare their jewelry and receive an appraisal certificate.

The new jewelry counter will operate alongside pre-existing counters at which passengers and flight crew can declare personal such as watches and sunglasses.
