GIA Plans to Hire 80 Entry-Level Diamond Graders

January 13, 15 by Danielle Max

(IDEX Online News) – In what will be welcome news for anyone who has had their diamonds held up by the GIA, the Carlsbad-based institute says it is looking to hire 80 entry-level diamond graders.

In an interview with U-T San Diego, Phillip Yantzer, GIA’s vice president of laboratory services said that the 130 diamond graders the institute has brought in since July 2013 are not enough.

“We have struggled with keeping up with the demands of the industry. We can say it has to do with the Internet, but in the business to business and business to consumer commerce, there are so many things with buying a diamond these days that people want a report. They want to know what they’re getting and more so not just the quality, but are they getting a natural untreated diamond?” he said.

According to utsandiego.com, the full-time job pays $14 to $15.62 an hour plus benefits. The new hires will also have the chance to complete the GIA’s curriculum to earn a graduate diamonds diploma.

The site said GIA will be hiring 20 new graders each quarter, starting from February.
