GJEPC Appeals to Industry Members Not to Sell Grading Reports

March 06, 16 by David Brummer

(IDEX Online News) – The Gem and Jewelry Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has urged diamantaires, traders and jewelers not to sell, give or throw away or deal in original diamond grading reports, according to a report in The Times of India.

Part of the GJEPC’s remit is the protection of the Indian diamond industry, which it says has been undermined by the recent incidence of a New Delhi-based firm being found to have advertised CVD diamonds with GIA natural certificates.

The council said that it is often the case that customers are not concerned about holding onto grading reports, which often leaves them in the hands of diamantaires or jewelers. They are concerned that blank grading reports will get into the hands of unscrupulous elements who may seek to use them to falsify the provenance of diamonds.

The TOI recently published an article that suggested that empty diamond grading certificates from reputable grading laboratories were being sold in Hong Kong and China for as little as $100.

GJEPC chairman Praveen Shanker Pandya told TOI, "Every trade member is requested to treat this as a matter of utmost significance, and take necessary steps to prevent fraudulent practices by unscrupulous traders."
