Charles Taylor Apprehended in Nigeria

March 29, 06 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

In an attempt to avoid facing a war crimes tribunal in Sierra Leone, Liberia's exiled former leader Charles Taylor made a dash for freedom Monday. The short lived flight ended earlier today (Wednesday) when Taylor was caught on the Cameroon border in north-eastern Nigeria.

Taylor, a prominent warlord in the Liberian civil war of the early 1990s, is due to be handed over to a Sierra Leonean court from Nigeria where he has lived since he went into exile in 2003. According to the BBC, Taylor was indicted on 17 charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, for backing Sierra Leone's rebels.

Nigeria has been widely criticized for allowing Taylor to escape.
