UN Lifts Liberia Diamond Ban

May 31, 07 by

The UN Security Council unanimously voted to lift its 2001 ban on diamond imports from Liberia.

The decision followed Liberian government compliance with Kimberley Process regulations that aim to keep conflict diamonds off world markets. The UN called on the Kimberley Process to report to the Security Council within 90 days on Liberia’s compliance with the KP certification scheme.

In response, NGO’s Global Witness and Partnership Africa Canada said the Liberia’s diamond production must be closely monitored. “The government of Liberia has made good progress in establishing a system of controls to prevent diamonds from fuelling conflict,” said Global Witness.

The NGOs called for effective implementation and enforcement of the process, including reporting and production statistics monitoring, saying it is crucial in ensuring that diamonds never again fuel wars.

Although the diamond ban has been lifted, mandate of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNIMIL) has been extended until September 30.
