Awesome Foursome Recovered at Letseng

In just one week, four exceptionally large diamonds have been discovered at Lesotho’s recently reopened Letseng diamond mine. Their total weight is reportedly 336 carats, and according to operators are all D flawless.

The run started last Friday when a flawless 76-carat stone was recovered. Two days later a 112-carat stone was discovered, on Tuesday a 106-carat beauty turned up and a 72-carat stone was recovered Wednesday.

“Each one is of the highest quality of white stone - D flawless,” said mine chief executive Keith Whitelock. They are already en route to Europe to be sold in a single parcel, and he expects them to sell for $6 million.

“There is a worldwide shortage of large high-quality stones, so $6 million might even be a little conservative.”

The mine has produced three diamonds larger than 500 carats in the past 50 years. In November 2003, a 215 carat diamond was found and fetched $2.31 million. A week later, the company found a 95 carat gem on its sorting table which fetched $1.57 million.

That was not the end. Last November a 123-carat flawless white diamond was discovered days before the official opening ceremony and sold for $2.33 million.

“I can’t wait for the rest of the week,” said a satisfied Whitelock.
