Oscars Diamond Jewelry Low-Down

March 01, 05 by Edahn Golan

The red carpet sparkle was there as ever at the movie industry's biggest night of the year – the Oscars. And the expectation that TV viewers took a good look at who wore what, and by that influenced buyers tastes and opinions, is a given. A plethora of custom designs, the usual diamond right hand rings, and diamond studded leading men were the dominant diamond jewelry items.

ring and cushion-cut diamond earrings

Naturally the woman who received most of the media’s attention was Oscar winner Hilary Swank who nabbed her second Best Actress Academy Award wearing a Chopard diamond ensemble that included a 5.16-carat emerald-cut Diamond Right Hand Ring flanked by diamond baguettes, and 2.13- and 2.16-carat cushion-cut diamond earrings set in platinum on a French wire.

Stars such as Kate Winslet and Halle Berry collaborated with jewelers to design one-of-a-kind diamond jewelry. Like many others, Winslet worked with Hollywood jeweler Neil Lane, designing diamond S-clips for her hair, two diamond clips to adorn the straps of her dress, and a pair of dramatic diamond drop earrings.

Berry teamed up with Lorraine Schwartz to craft brown diamond briolette drop earrings.

Trends included statement earrings, large or small. Whether modern, vintage, linear or chandelier these styles were all a part of the growing trend in showcasing bold earrings. Also sighted at the Awards was hair jewelry in the form of tiaras and headbands. Brooches and bracelets were ubiquitous, as were large, powerful necklaces.

Hollywood’s leading men didn’t leave the diamond field to women, with Don Cheadle, Chris Rock, Morgan Freeman, and Samuel L. Jackson choosing sophisticated diamond accessories to accent their outfits. There were no fashion “don’ts” with diamond stud buttons (seen on Oscar winner Morgan Freeman), diamond lapel jewelry, and diamond cufflinks.

As to the rest, here is a quick breakdown. The younger stars picked fun, flirtatious looks, diamond princesses wearing tiaras and hair jewels, and statement-making diamond earrings and necklaces

For example, Natalie Portman wore a Fred Leighton, 19th century style headband valued at $75,000 and a 3.9-carat cushion-cut diamond right hand ring. Scarlett Johansson also picked a Fred Leighton 19th century 3-star diamond tiara, valued at $55,000.

Kirsten Dunst, Fred Leighton again, had rose-cut diamond pendant earrings with diamond briolettes valued at $23,000, rose-cut diamond and rock crystal cuff bracelet worth $250,000. Maggie Gyllenhaal: diamond right hand Riviera ring with square-cut diamond and 100-carat, round-cut diamond necklace, all by Neil Lane. Jamie Foxx’s daughter Corinne also had a diamond headband.

Beyonce and a statement earring

Those considered Hollywood’s “A List” chose to go with the trends, some just with diamond right hand rings, some also had statement earrings:

Gwyneth Paltrow had an all Damiani look with a one-of-a-kind, custom-made diamond bracelet and teardrop-shaped diamond hoop earrings. Kate Winslet picked Neil Lane: Diamond and platinum earrings with 5-carat diamond drops, which were custom-made for her, two matching diamond cuff bracelets featuring 40 carats each, two 5-carat diamond clips on her dress, and custom-made S-clips for her hair.

Renee Zellweger had an emerald-cut diamond and platinum ring, diamond line necklace with emerald- and oval-cut diamonds, emerald-cut diamond and platinum bracelet – all by Cartier.

Charlize Theron took the Bulgari route with two vintage 1939 Art Deco diamond bracelets set in platinum, round- and baguette-cut diamond chandelier earrings.

Drew Barrymore – Black and white diamond carousel earrings totaling 40 carats by Neil Lane, brilliant-cut diamond link bracelet by Harry Winston, while Julia Roberts took to the red carpet in her own Cathy Waterman three-stone diamond drop earrings.

The industry’s Divas (read pretty, rich, famous but over 40) selected classic gems, some wearing their own jewelry:

Helen Mirren, like many others, turned to Neil Lane who supplied her with a 25-carat Edwardian diamond necklace worth $155,000 with a 5-carat center stone, 56-carat diamond chain valued at $125,000, 1920s diamond pendant earrings worth $145,000 and an Edwardian diamond bracelet worth $38,000.

Melanie Griffith wore Harry Winston diamond drop earrings, while Imelda Staunton arrived with diamond hoop earrings, diamond brooch, and diamond right hand ring. Annette Bening had her own diamond drop earrings like Oprah Winfrey who showed up with her own diamond chandeliers with diamond drops and diamond cuff bracelet.

The men, as mentioned, did not shy away from the mined sparkle. Jamie Foxx showed off a black and white diamond watch valued at $57,000, and a diamond ring set in platinum and red gold worth $11,000, all by Chris Aire, and diamond-accented sunglasses.

Morgan Freeman, unique as ever with a one-of-a-kind, oversized diamond Cartier Pasha 42, diamond stud worn as top button.

Don Cheadle, also by Chris Aire: single pave diamond hoop, Aire Traveler diamond watch valued at $32,000 and D / flawless diamond cufflinks totaling 1.5 carats, valued at $15,000.

Leonardo Di Caprio – 4-carat emerald-cut diamond cufflinks set in white gold worth $24,000 by Jacob the Jeweler.

Sean “P.Diddy” Combs in his own custom-designed Jacob & Co watch, diamond bracelet, diamond rings and diamond cufflinks. Usher took to Aber owned Harry Winston: Avenue Chronograph diamond watch, 4-carat brilliant-cut diamond studs.
