Positive Trend for Japan's Diamond Industry Continues

(IDEX Online News) - Japan imported 243,567 carats of polished diamonds worth $72.4 million in January, shooting upwards 28.6 percent and 44 percent respectively from January 2010. This figures not only match pre-crisis import levels, they also demonstrate Japan's renewed interest in diamond jewelry.
The value of imports match the value of imports in January 2008 and the volume matches those of January 2007, based on data collected by Momozawa & Co., Inc.
The average value of imports, $297.17 p/c, marked a smaller year-over-year increase, 11.9 percent.
The latest data shows that India continues to be Japan's main polished diamond supplier, 199,896 carats worth $33.1 million, increasing 37.8 percent by volume and 46.2 percent by value compared to January 2010.
Belgium was source of $11 million worth of goods at $1,817 p/c, followed by Israel, which shipped $5.8 million worth of goods at 1,228 p/c.
