Japan Polished Diamond Imports +9.1%

December 30, 12 by Edahn Golan

(IDEX Online News) – Japan imported $67.8 million worth of polished diamonds in November, a 9.1 percent year-over-year increase, signaling that the country's interest in diamond jewelry this holiday season is better than it was last year.

The volume of imports increased 46.6 percent to 193,305 carats, according to data released by Momozawa & Co.

As expected, November imports are a decline from October's imports, when stores were busy stocking up ahead of the holiday season. Month-over-month, imports declined 28.4 percent by value and 30.9 percent by volume, inline with previous years.

The average value of imports in November, $350.67 per carat, declined 25.6 percent year-over-year but increased 3.6 percent compared to October.

In the first 11 months of 2012, Japan's polished diamond imports increased by 11.6 percent to 834.2 million.
